About AT

The Alexander Technique is a movement re-education method that helps individuals to improve the ease, comfort and skill with which they perform any physical activity. We'll work together to identify inefficient muscular habits that interfere with your body's natural coordination, often causing fatigue, chronic strain or injury. Once harmful habits are identified, students learn how to stop this interference allowing their body's natural movement reflexes to take over. With the subtraction of tension and chronic pain we see an increase in comfort, coordination, energy, physical capabilities and overall performance and well-being. We then can begin to explore how to blend these changes into both everyday activities such as standing, walking, bending, reaching, gripping, speaking, etc. and specialized activities such as typing, running, singing, dancing, playing an instrument, giving massages, and the list goes on.The Alexander Technique is often referred to as a subtractive technique. It's a reminder that we don't have to work so hard. Our bodies are built to move in a most healthy and functional manner. The Alexander Technique teaches us very simply how to get out of our own way so that our bodies can do what they already know how to do. We learn to do less so that our body can accomplish more in any activity we choose. WHAT TO EXPECT IN A LESSON:Lessons are tailored to address the needs of the student. Each individual brings a unique body and a unique set of experiences to their lesson. The way in which we learn and how quickly change takes place differs from one person to the next and teachers are trained to be creative and vary their approach to suit the need of the student at any given moment.I rely on a combination of verbal instruction, light physical touch and feedback from you, the student, in order to help you develop an understanding of your movements patterns and how your body is put together. These same methods will also help you cultivate the skills needed to direct your body to move in the most functional manner possible. Patterns and habits build up over months, often years, so permanent change will not happen over night. But with time and practice every student can learn to prevent unnecessary strain and improve their ability to move comfortably and skillfully in any situation.

Hello! I'm Jess and I'd love to tell you a bit about how the Alexander Technique became such an integral part of my world! It was both my life long struggle with juvenile rhuematoid arthritis along with my training as a singer and actor that led me to study the Alexander Technique. I began my teacher training in 2007 under the tutelage of Master Alexander Technique teacher, Chloe Wing and in August of 2010, I completed my studies earning my teaching certification from her program. I received my teaching certification from Alexander Technique International in November of 2011.My first encounter with the Alexander Technique occurred while I was in school at the Boston Conservatory of Music where I graduated magna cum laude, earning a BFA in Musical Theater Performance. We touched briefly on AT as a tool to help free up our bodies and voices while creating and performing different roles. But it wasn't until much later that I truly came to understand all that the Alexander Technique had to offer.In 2004, I was proud to be a working actor and had just finished a show that was extremely vocally taxing when the unthinkable happened; I lost my voice and it did not come back. After 2 years of doctors visits and weeks upon weeks of complete vocal rest, it was determined that surgery was my only option in order to remove the polyps that had formed on my vocal chords due to misuse. Once my surgery was successfully completed, I began the long process of vocal rehabilitation. It was here that I was re-introduced to the Alexander Technique and finally saw just how valuable it was. Not only did it help me to identify and get rid of habits that may have been responsible for my vocal problems, but I also began to notice that every time I left a session, I felt incredible! It was not just my voice and throat that felt free and easy, but all of me. My whole body was moving better and more comfortably, which was an incredible discovery! I was so accustomed to my every day aches and pains, I thought they were normal, and suddenly they were gone and I felt great! It was then that I decided I wanted to become a certified Alexander Technique teacher. Thanks for taking the time to check out my site! Alexander Technique (AT) has dramatically improved my life in so many ways. I have significantly reduced tension in my body which has enhanced my performance physically and mentally. AT allowed me to significantly enhance my yoga practice as well as my Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) practice. Hatha I am a pretty open-minded person and I'm always interested in learning techniques for making me healthier, happier, more aware, more relaxed/centered, etc., so I was totally game to have a lesson with Jess to see what the Alexander Technique was all about. We started with me lying on the floor and doing some breathing work to bring my awareness to my body. After doing this for ten minutes, Jess had me stand up and asked me how I felt. I felt sort of high and also very grounded. I felt flushed in my face and my fingers felt all tingly because the exercise had improved my circulation. Then we played with a few exercises to create space in my body, to release tension and to properly balance my skull on top of my spine in order to minimize strain. At one point, after we had worked on releasing the muscle tension in the back of my neck, Jess again asked me how I felt. I felt like my head was tilted forward toward the floor. She had me look in the mirror and surprise - my head was perfectly straight and my posture looked wonderful! The session was extremely relaxing and after just one hour, I could see and feel a difference in the way my body was moving and the way I was carrying myself. I am definitely having a second session!

I didn't know anything about the Alexander Technique but I was immediately intrigued by the way Jess explained it. I started skyping sessions with her and found that, in less than 30 minutes, I was able to achieve a level of relaxation that I didn't think was possible . My posture is better for it and I have a greater awareness of my own body's space. Jess is a dedicated practioner--she makes sure that the classes make sense to you and have immediate application in your life. I highly recommend Jess!!
